Inflammation and CBD is such an important topic to us here at House of Spain. Did you know that depression, cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, allergies, chronic fatigue, autoimmune disease, and more are all inflammatory diseases? Pretty mind blowing, isn’t it?
This naturally begs the question, what is causing all of this rampant inflammation and how can we help it? In truth, most if it is from our modern lifestyle, most notable the food we eat. While many foods can (and do) trigger inflammation, there are also many that can help. The polyphenols in plant foods and spices are among natures best inflammation fighting compounds. Some include: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, turmeric, ginger, and rosemary. All these help to naturally neutralize inflammation. Omega-3 found in wild fish, seafood, nuts and seeds are also powerful anti-inflammatories. Mushrooms and foods rich in vitamins and minerals help too. This is all great news an a wonderful place to start but how does CBD help as well?
How CBD can help
It is important to understanding the science behind how CBD interacts with our bodies. This will help us then understand how CBD can be effective in reducing inflammation.
Our bodies are home to our endocannabinoid system (ECS) which produces and responds to cannabinoids. These cannabinoids play a critical role in healthy body function and inflammation reduction. Hemp and cannabis plants produces phytocannabinoids like CBD. These are similar to the endocannabinoids produced by the human body; both types of cannabinoids interact with the ECS.
There are two cannabinoid receptors, are the most significant when it comes to CBD- type 1 (CB1) and type 2 (CB2).
While CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain, CB2 receptors can be located throughout the body and central nervous system. CB2 receptors are responsible for helping to regulate the immune system, and the immunes systems inflammatory responses. This is so important because chronic inflammation has been shown to play an important role in the development and progression of a variety of diseases. This means that normal CB2 function is not only necessary for reducing inflammation, but also for maintaining health and overall wellness.
CBD has been shown to bind to some CB2 receptors. It also exhibits its effects through indirect activation of non-cannabinoid receptors in order to target mechanisms and processes in the body that cause inflammation. CBD has been shown to disrupt the immune response, and thus, preventing inflammation from occurring at all!
How Should I Use CBD for Inflammation?
Always speak with your doctor before starting a new wellness routine or adding any supplements to your diet. It is likely and has been reported that the fastest and most potent effects are experienced by ingesting CBD oil under the tongue via concentrated tinctures. CBD edibles on the other hand, may provide longer-lasting outcomes and are generally a sweet alternative. Many find topical relief for joint pain, muscle pain and inflammation from topical solutions such as rich body salves.
We hope this helps in understanding the benefits of CBD for inflammation and as always, we are always happy to answer questions! Please reach out here and thanks for reading!
